Melbourne linen company pivots to boost National Medical Stockpile

Hospitality, event and medical supplier Clets Linen & Co has earned a contract to produce disposable isolation gowns for the National Medical Stockpile.

Clets was established in 1994 and is based in Heidelberg, Melbourne. It will produce 3,750 gowns in its first production run, responding to new demand caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s great that we can unite as one to assist our frontliners in this time of need. It will be good to get manufacturing back into Australia to get us to stand on our own two feet,” said the family-owned company’s managing director, Lisa Pachos, in a

statement.

The non-woven polypropylene products are made using “specialised materials and processes” including ultrasonic welding.

Federal industry minister Karen Andrews praised the company and the agility of the local textile, clothing and footwear sector.

“By Clets Linen pivoting from its traditional manufacturing capability to produce much needed disposable isolation gowns, the new domestic supply chain will support skilled TCF workers beyond the short term,” said Andrews.

“In addition to securing supplies of medical grade isolation gowns to the Stockpile, the Federal Government has been working hand in glove with the TCF industry and the states and territories to establish a domestic manufacturing footprint.”
