In a move towards sustainable energy, the federal government has activated a new community battery in Cammeray, North Sydney, which it says will reduce household energy bills and enhance the reliability of renewable energy sources for the local community.
“Whether you’re a homeowner with solar panels, a renter or a social housing resident, this community battery ensures access to affordable renewable energy when needed,” energy minister Chris Bowen said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Cammeray community battery is designed to store excess energy generated from rooftop solar installations during peak sunlight hours and distribute it during higher demand periods.
According to the statement, the battery promises around $200 annual savings for approximately 350 local households and also alleviates the need for costly upgrades to the existing electrical infrastructure.
Australia installed its four millionth rooftop solar installation last year suggesting a strong public inclination towards sustainable energy solutions.
The Cammeray battery, a 200kW / 284kWh system, is built and owned by Ausgrid and is part of the ‘Community Batteries for Household Solar’ program, which encourages local energy sharing and efficiency.
Residents interested in benefiting from the Cammeray battery are encouraged to sign up for the Energy Storage as a Service provided by Ausgrid, promising a direct reduction in their energy expenses and participation in a greener future.
