CSIRO, Murdoch University launch $8 million bioplastics hub

National science agency CSIRO and Murdoch University have launched The Bioplastics Innovation Hub, focussed on biologically-derived plastics that can break down in nature.

According to a statement from CSIRO on Monday, the effort is valued at $8 million, and links industry partners with experts in disciplines including microbiology, molecular genetics, synthetic biology and biochemical engineering.

“Our primary focus is the development of 100 per cent compostable, bio-derived packaging for use as sprays, films, bottles, caps and wrappers which are engineered to fully break down in compost, land and in aquatic environments,” said CSIRO Research Program Director Dr Andy Whiteley in a statement.

The first project will be with Ecopha Biotech on developing a new process for making water bottles out of “compostable bioplastics derived from waste products from the food industry.”

According to its website, Bentley, WA-headquartered Ecopha has successfully completed the R&D stage and filed several patents related to polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastic production. PHA is created using fermentation of sugars or lipids.

“Ecopha Biotech’s role is to ensure that the new ideas and technologies developed from the Hub are successfully commercialized, contributing to a more sustainable future for Australia,” said CEO Dr Wilson Ling.

“Through the Bioplastics Innovation Hub, we are focused on developing bioplastics that will help address the plastic waste problem both in Australia and globally.

Murdoch University’s Professor Peter Eastwood said the collaboration will introduce a green plastic to the market and “significantly minimise” the need for non-sustainable materials.

“We also aim to assist industry in establishing an advanced biomanufacturing sector, to commercialise compostable bioplastics that meet the manufacturing design needs and certification standards for 100 per cent biodegradation,” Eastwood added.

The Bioplastics Innovation Hub is headquartered at Murdoch’s main campus in Perth.
