Dive into a greener summer: Australia’s prawn packaging gets a sustainable makeover!

This summer, Visy, Australia’s largest integrated manufacturing and recycling business, is teaming up with seafood producer Tassal to revolutionise prawn packaging, making it eco-friendly with new recyclable cardboard boxes.

Gone are the days of expanded polystyrene (EPS) containers, notorious for their environmental harm. These new boxes are crafted from up to 74 per cent recycled content, setting a new standard for sustainability in seafood packaging.

Each year, the seafood industry uses approximately 100,000 EPS boxes across Australia, a material that is notoriously difficult to recycle. The new cardboard boxes, produced at Visy’s Carole Park facility in Queensland, are designed to combat this waste issue head-on. They promise to deliver prawns fresh and in style, without leaving a trail of pollution.

Adrian Dalgleish, Visy’s Executive General Manager for Fibre Packaging, highlights the innovation behind these boxes, “By working closely with Tassal, we have created a purpose-built box which maintains temperature and structural integrity when exposed to water—ensuring Australians get fresh prawns without the waste.”

Libby Williams, Tassal’s General Manager Marketing and Innovation, added, “Our new 10kg cardboard prawn box is a win for the industry and the environment. By partnering with Visy, we’re able to utilize recyclable cardboard while maintaining freshness and quality so consumers can be assured that the path their favorite prawns take this summer are in a sustainable package vs EPS boxes previously.”

This sustainable initiative not only keeps prawns fresh but also supports the health of our planet, ensuring that your summer seafood feasts are both delicious and environmentally responsible.
