Alan Oppenheim, the Managing Director of family-owned skincare business Ego Pharmaceuticals, was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (General Division) on Monday.
Oppenheim (pictured) has led the company as Managing Director since 1990, according to a statement from Ego, and was its Scientific Director from 1980 – 1990.
“I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive this recognition,” he said.
“This award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of every member of the Ego Pharmaceuticals team, past and present.
“It reflects our shared commitment to transforming lives through the science of healthy skin and to the legacy of care established by my parents over 70 years ago. I share this honour with all of them.”
Ego was founded by Gerald and Rae Oppenheim, a chemist and nurse respectively, in 1953.
The company said it is committed to “providing quality-backed solutions for various skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis and head lice,” and played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic by supplying its Aqium Hand Sanitiser to hospitals and aged care facilities.
Alan Oppenheim’s wife, Dr Jane Oppenheim, is Ego’s executive director of Science and Operations, and has been at the company for over three decades, “with her leadership in scientific development and manufacturing growth significantly contributing to Ego’s success.”
According to a media release from Ego last December, it employs over 650 staff across 15 nations. It operates Global Manufacturing and Support Centres at Braeside and Dandenong South in Victoria.
