ASX-listed First Graphene<\/a> has announced a successful trial of graphene powders incorporated into composite construction materials with collaborator Ascent Shipwrights.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to the Perth-based graphene supplier, initial test work incorporating different proportions of graphene at 0.25, 0.5 and 1 per cent into a fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) laminate showed improvements in ultimate flexural strength.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The nanomaterial graphene is a single layer of hexagonally-arranged carbon atoms, which First Graphene makes from graphite. <\/span>Composite boats use a core sandwiched between layers of FRP.\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <\/p>\n <\/p>\n A 1 per cent proportion of Puregraph 20 nanoparticles gave a 50 per cent improvement in tests on ultimate flexural strength.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The composite materials were made \u201cusing existing production methods\u201d at the shipbuilder\u2019s factory.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Further, larger-scale testing is planned on \u201ca variety of core materials\u201d and compositions, with anticipated improvements in hydrolisis resistance, water diffusion and UV resistance, according to First Graphene, which hopes \u201cto unlock the very large boat building market\u201d.<\/a><\/span><\/p>
