{"id":56150,"date":"2022-10-06T12:20:17","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T01:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/?p=56150"},"modified":"2022-10-06T12:20:17","modified_gmt":"2022-10-06T01:50:17","slug":"wind-farm-could-power-portland-aluminum-smelter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wind-farm-could-power-portland-aluminum-smelter","title":{"rendered":"Wind farm could power Portland aluminum smelter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced $1.5 million in funding to Spinifex Offshore Wind Farm to back its study the potential for a 1,000 MW offshore wind farm project off the coast of Portland, Victoria to power the local smelter.<\/p>\n<p>Spinifex, a subsidiary of Alinta Energy, will conduct a wind resource assessment and accelerate early stage development activities leading to the wind farm&#8217;s construction.<\/p>\n<p>The offshore wind farm would to be connected to the National Electricity Market (NEM) via the existing substation, immediately turning one of Australia&#8217;s biggest carbon polluters into a green industry icon.<\/p><div class=\"wooco-content\" id=\"wooco-350561787\"><div style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"wooco-1706426401\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/page.spee3d.com\/download-spee3d-heavy-industry-whitepaper?utm_campaign=Au%20Manufacturing%20Lead%20Gen%202024&#038;utm_source=AuManufacturing_campaign_1\" class=\"adv-link\" aria-label=\"SPEE3D_BannerAds-468&#215;60\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/SPEE3D_BannerAds-468x60-1.png\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/SPEE3D_BannerAds-468x60-1.png 468w, https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/SPEE3D_BannerAds-468x60-1-300x38.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" width=\"468\" height=\"60\"  style=\"display: inline-block; max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p>It would also lay to rest decades of controversy over electricity currently supplied from Victoria&#8217;s brown coal fields, which is subsidised by the Victorian government.<\/p>\n<p>The smelter has capacity to produce approximately 358,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum &#8211; more than 20% of national aluminium production &#8211; and represents approximately 10 per cent of Victoria\u2019s total electrical demand. <\/p>\n<p>ARENA CEO Darren Miller said the project was the first to directly integrate variable renewable energy with an aluminium smelter, supporting the transition to low emissions metals. <\/p><div class=\"wooco-in-content-after-par-6\" id=\"wooco-1604972012\"><div style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"wooco-1948879488\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sew-eurodrive.com.au\/home.html\" class=\"adv-link\" aria-label=\"Auman_Second ad within content_Quality, Service+Delivery\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Auman_Second-ad-within-content_Quality-ServiceDelivery-e1713733941954.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"468\" height=\"60\"  style=\"display: inline-block; max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Miller said: \u201cMetals production, especially aluminium, represents one of Australia\u2019s most energy intensive industries. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a real need to help reduce emissions from smelters, which require a steady and sizeable supply of electricity to operate. Offshore wind could be a potential part of the solution space to this problem.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther, the early stage wind resource assessment of the Spinifex project will provide the industry with valuable insights regarding commercial, technical and regulatory aspects of offshore wind developments in Australia. <\/p>\n<p>This $3.47 million project is phase 1 of Spinifex\u2019s proposed development pathway for the wind farm and aims to improve understanding of its commercial viability. <\/p>\n<p>The project includes scope to procure and deploy land-based Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) equipment to validate the wind resources at the proposed Portland site. <\/p>\n<p>Spinifex will also conduct stakeholder and community consultation activities and begin scoping activities for relevant planning and environmental studies required under the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act 2021. <\/p>\n<p>The development of offshore wind farms internationally has accelerated over the past decade. <\/p>\n<p>Offshore wind farms benefit from higher capacity factors, increased turbine size and efficiency, as well as an increased site availability by avoiding onshore land constraints. <\/p>\n<p>The Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act 2021 commenced on June 2. There are currently over 20 offshore wind projects in early stages of development in Australia. <\/p>\n<p>Alinta Energy CEO Jeff Dimery said: \u201cSpinifex has terrific potential because the region has strong wind and the project has a ready-made grid connection point, a potential customer, a port, and suitable topography.
