{"id":72597,"date":"2023-12-06T01:29:50","date_gmt":"2023-12-05T14:59:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/?p=72597"},"modified":"2023-12-05T15:51:18","modified_gmt":"2023-12-05T05:21:18","slug":"elo2-to-unveil-its-moon-rover-candidate-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/elo2-to-unveil-its-moon-rover-candidate-today","title":{"rendered":"ELO2 to unveil its moon rover candidate today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ELO2 consortium will today unveil a prototype of what could be chosen as Australia\u2019s first lunar rover. <\/p>\n<p>Led by EPE and Lunar Outpost Oceania, ELO2 is one of two consortia chosen by the Australian Space Agency to develop early-stage design concepts for a Moon rover.  <\/p>\n<p>ELO2 Technical Director with Lunar Outpost Oceania Joseph Kenrick said: &#8220;Our consortium&#8217;s unveiling of the lunar rover prototype is a testament to Australia&#8217;s commitment to space exploration. <\/p><div class=\"wooco-content\" id=\"wooco-708712479\"><div style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"wooco-1192868449\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/page.spee3d.com\/download-spee3d-heavy-industry-whitepaper?utm_campaign=Au%20Manufacturing%20Lead%20Gen%202024&#038;utm_source=AuManufacturing_campaign_1\" class=\"adv-link\" aria-label=\"SPEE3D_BannerAds-468&#215;60\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/SPEE3D_BannerAds-468x60-1.png\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/SPEE3D_BannerAds-468x60-1.png 468w, https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/SPEE3D_BannerAds-468x60-1-300x38.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" width=\"468\" height=\"60\"  style=\"display: inline-block; max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This unveiling marks the beginning of an exciting journey and invites every Australian to be part of our nation&#8217;s cosmic endeavours.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The consortium is working on the project under the Australian Space Agency\u2019s Moon to Mars Trailblazer program which aims to land the rover on the Moon as part of a future NASA Artemis mission later this decade.  <\/p>\n<p>If selected for the mission, on the Moon\u2019s surface, it will be tasked with transporting lunar regolith (Moon soil) to a NASA-run facility for the extraction of oxygen. <\/p><div class=\"wooco-in-content-after-par-6\" id=\"wooco-122780771\"><div style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"wooco-937246243\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sew-eurodrive.com.au\/home.html\" class=\"adv-link\" aria-label=\"Auman_Second ad within content_Quality, Service+Delivery\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aumanufacturing.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Auman_Second-ad-within-content_Quality-ServiceDelivery-e1713733941954.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"468\" height=\"60\"  style=\"display: inline-block; max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The initial prototype focuses on testing chassis and suspension subsystems and features an early design of a collection device and special wheels that will enable the rover to cross the Moon\u2019s challenging terrain. <\/p>\n<p>Prototyping such as this is an important step in testing designs for continuous improvement; something that is essential in the space industry.  <\/p>\n<p>Beyond transporting regolith, the rover would autonomously navigate the lunar environment, locate and collect regolith, and is an essential element to enable NASA\u2019s in-situ resource utilisation facility to operate. <\/p>\n<p>Director of Innovation and Commercialization at EPE Ben Sorensen said: &#8220;ELO2 is designing and developing world-leading technology, capitalising on Australia\u2019s strengths, and leveraging Trailblazer funding to develop dual-use critical technologies able to support technology development for AUKUS Pillar II. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This initiative extends beyond advancing our space industry; it encompasses critical applications in climate change monitoring, critical mineral sourcing for Earth\u2019s green transition, and remote operations in healthcare. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This integrated approach not only benefits our space endeavours but also contributes significantly to vital industries on Earth.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Picture: ELO2<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ELO2 consortium will today unveil a prototype of what could be chosen as Australia\u2019s first lunar rover.
