100 new Future Fellowships awarded, including for quantum technology, antimicrobial research

Funding totalling $93 million has been announced to support researchers through the Australian Research Council’s Future Fellowships.

The program is designed to retain outstanding mid-career researchers producing work in “areas of critical national importance” according to the ARC.

Fellowships were awarded to 100 projects on Wednesday.

ARC CEO Professor Sue Thomas described recipients as “outstanding mid-career researchers, who will receive funding support for the next four years to undertake their innovative research in Australia.”

Federal education minister Alan Tudge said, “From better understanding microscopic cells and molecules, to using solar energy to explore the expanses of space, these projects will unlock new knowledge and increase our standing on the world stage.”

Projects include:

  • $919,000 to Australian National University for development of better, cheaper, more robust quantum technologies.
  • $755,000 to University of NSW for designing antimicrobial materials to fight drug-resistant bacteria in healthcare and agriculture; and
  • $1,126,000 to University of Western Australia to advance 3D computer vision for use in 3D mapping, surveying, robotics and autonomous vehicles.

Funding covers “salary awarded at one of three salary levels and up to $60,000 per annum project funding,” the ARC’s website says.
