Naval Group and Defence respond on submarine industry involvement

French submarine builder Naval Group and the Department of Defence have responded to criticism and have issued a joint statement on Australian industry involvement in the construction of 12 Attack class submarines in Adelaide.

The joint statement does not mention concerns that have been raised about the level of local participation in the project.

However it reaffirms the commitment of Naval Group and Defence to maximise industry involvement in the project.

The statement issued today said the project is in the preliminary design phase which will continue into the 2020s, transitioning to Australia during a detailed phase.

“Over 137 Australian companies and organisations have subcontracts at this point.

“A listing of many of these is (below).”

While many technology companies, manufacturers and consultants are listed, the list also includes travel and hotel groups, real estate companies and others who are not contributing to the submarine build.

Defence and Naval Group said the next step is the building of a hull qualification section in Adelaide which will begin in 2023 and certify workers and facilities ahead of construction.

“As these activities progress, we will also be systematically approaching Australian industry to identify suitable suppliers of the vast array of equipment to be fitted to the submarine, ranging from hydraulic systems to galley equipment.

“Providing Australian industry with opportunities to become involved in the programme during design of the submarine offers us the best opportunity to develop capability and build the enduring industrial base we will need.”

The current focus is on understanding the capabilities of industry, including those in the existing supply chains supporting the Collins class submarines.

“As all of these activities progress, the level of Australian industry participation and the development of Australian industry capability will continue to grow, meeting our goal of maximising industry’s involvement in the Attack Class Submarine Program and sustaining the sovereign control our nation requires over this strategic Defence capability.”
