Space Machines Company, which is developing vehicles for in-space servicing of satellites, has announced former Head of Engineering at Nanosonics Shane Albances as its new engineering lead.

Albances (pictured) is leading the team at SMC preparing for the MAITRI mission, scheduled for 2026, which will feature the planned launch of Space Machines Company’s second Optimus satellite.

In a statement on Friday, SMC said the new VP of Engineering will support the team in “demonstrating the capabilities in delivering the technology solutions, and build a roadmap towards adding functionality and capability as the company grows.”

According to his Linkedin profile, Albances most recently led engineering at ASX-listed automated disinfection technology company Nanosonics for just over five years, following nine years in various engineering roles at hearing implant maker Cochlear. He graduated from Queensland University of Technology with honours in biomedical/medical engineering.

“I’m incredibly passionate about engineering and finding solutions for challenging problems whilst also wanting to feel connected to the company’s mission,” said Albances in a statement.

“Joining Space Machines Company, I view my role as bridging our current position in the sector with our future aspirations through engineering solutions. The company is at the forefront of pushing boundaries in space technology and the global space ecosystem, which is what drew me to them.”

SMC’s aim is to build a fleet of servicing vehicles to provide “roadside assistance” to satellites, offering “inspection, repair and upgrade” of “on-orbit infrastructure”.
