Australian Vanadium secures planning approval for Western Australian processing hub

Australian Vanadium has achieved a key regulatory milestone with planning approval for its vanadium processing facility at Tenindewa, approximately 65 kilometres east of Geraldton, according to an announcement on Sunday.

The Western Australian Planning Commission approved the development application for the processing plant, which forms a central component of the company's integrated vanadium supply chain strategy across Western Australia.

Chief executive Graham Arvidson said the approval represents a landmark moment for the company's vision of a fully integrated vanadium value chain. “This is a landmark moment for AVL and a significant step forward in realising our vision of a homegrown, fully integrated vanadium value chain,” Arvidson said on Sunday.

The Tenindewa facility will connect with Australian Vanadium's mine and concentrator at Gabanintha near Meekatharra, and a vanadium electrolyte manufacturing plant already operating in Perth. Together, these facilities will enable the company to produce vanadium products and manufacture electrolyte for vanadium flow batteries entirely within Western Australia.

The planning commission's Significant Development Assessment Unit recommended approval with certain conditions, noting the project's alignment with the federal government's Critical Minerals Strategy and Future Made in Australia plan. The facility is expected to bring long-term economic benefits to the Mid West region, including job creation and regional investment across critical minerals and renewable energy sectors.
