Applications opened on Tuesday for the federal Battery Breakthrough Initiative, announced in the 2024 budget, offering $500 million in support through “capital grants, production incentives or other payments” and administered by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA.)
According to a statement from industry minister Tim Ayres (pictured) on Tuesday, the initiative aims to see more of the battery value chain captured in Australia. It has a focus on “areas such as stationary energy storage and production of battery active materials” using local resources.
“Batteries are a critical component of the global move to reduce carbon emissions and there is a huge opportunity for Australia to be part of this global demand,” said Ayres.
Projects must be at Technology Readiness Level 6 or above. Program guidelines are available here.
For those interested, ARENA is running two upcoming webinars on the program, to be held on September 2 and 17.
