GFG Alliance-owned steel recycler InfraBuild has won the Innovation of the Year award at the annual Steelie Awards, hosted by the World Steel Association (worldsteel.)
Tracey Sen (pictured left), Executive General Manager of Communications, represented the company at the event in Washington, DC and which was hosted by the industry group representing 85 per cent of the world’s steel production.
The Steelie Awards are in their 16th year.
“It’s a proud moment and great honour to see not only Australian innovation recognised at this level, but also InfraBuild,” said Sen in a statement on Wednesday (Australian time.)
“We believe in sustainability driven innovation solutions and SENSE 600 is a clear expression of how to do it.”
According to the company, its SENSE 600 product range has the same strength and performance as its standard Grade 500 steel, is made from 100 per cent scrap, and reduces raw material used by 16.7 per cent and embodied carbon by up to 39 per cent.
Infrabuild is the nation’s second-biggest steelmaker, and runs Australia’s only steelmaking electric arc furnaces.
Parent company GFG operated the Whyalla Steelworks until February, before they were forced into administration by the South Australian government. A sale process is currently underway for the steelworks and their associated assets.
