The Advanced Fibre Cluster Geelong has announced the appointment of David Buchanan as its new CEO, replacing Jennifer Conley.

Buchanan has over 30 years’ experience at senior levels in international companies, including 14 years as GM of Metals at Toyota Tsusho, and is currently CEO of the Australian Steel Association. He began work as CEO of AFCG on April 1.

AFCG chair, Jeff Lawrence (also of Sykes Rowing) welcomed Buchanan in a statement from the group on Monday, saying, “David knows this region well and we are absolutely delighted to have his support and expertise.

“David’s passion and commitment for building industry opportunities will be key in driving further collaboration and business growth for our members.”

Conley – who is now chair of the Geelong Manufacturing Council, a partner organisation to AFCG – said Buchanan’s experience, “will help accelerate the Cluster’s endeavours to grow opportunities and ensure this region is recognised as a global centre of advanced fibre and composites manufacturing excellence.”

The cluster is an initiative of fibre and composite companies centred around Deakin University and the Geelong region. Founding members include Carbon Revolution, Sykes Rowing, Quickstep, Andritz, and Geelong Hirst Carpets.
