Agricultural residue-to-hydrogen among projects sharing $2.27 m in BRII grants

Twenty-three businesses have been awarded a total of $2.27 million under the Business Research and Innovation Initiative (BRII) to support feasibility studies on ideas addressing current challenges for government.

The funding was announced on Tuesday, supporting early-stage solutions related to the natural environment, with 220 applicants. The five challenge themes and the relevant federal government agencies were:

Revolutionising agricultural spray applications  (Cotton Research and Development Corporation)

Turning farm crops into a renewable hydrogen source (Grains Research and Development Corporation)

Turning office trash into energy treasure (Australian Renewable Energy Agency)

Counting fish using advanced technologies (Australian Institute of Marine Science)

Automating the detection of whales at sea (National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority)

The initiative gave companies with “clever ideas the opportunity to develop them further, with the potential of creating products that will benefit the community and the Australian economy,” said industry minister Karen Andrews.

“Government agencies will have the option to purchase any of the developed products, which have been specifically tailored to meet national challenges.

Funding was awarded under stage two of the three-stage Business Research and Innovation Initiative. The round followed challenge selection, with the final stage being proof of concept. Proof of concepts are eligible for up to $1 million in support.
