Alexium customers launch chemical furnishing treatment

Specialty chemicals manufacturer Alexium International (ASX: AJX) is to debut new uses for its flame retardants in the bedding industry at an upcoming show in the United States.

CEO Bob Brookins said products incorporating the company’s Alexicool fire retardant would be displayed at the upcoming Las Vegas bedding show.

He said: “We are actively working to further support new and existing customers to grow this market segment.”

Perth-based Alexium has been developing Alexicool treatments which absorb heat, providing a durable fire retardant finish to fabrics.

The company also produces Alexiflam flame retardant for synthetic and synthetic-blend fabrics, and cotton and cotton-blends.

Brookins annonced in a market update that the development of this product for nylon/cotton fabrics for US military uses had been successful.

“Aleium has been working with Pine Belt processing on providing production-scale fabrics for the next phase of testing and evaluation by the US military.

“This work has been conducted under the terms of a development agreement established with Pine Belt.”

Pine Belt is a supplier to the US military of finished garments for applications such as permanent press and insecticides.

A priority for the company in 2020 is to provide technical and sales support for its products in China, where many of the textiles treated with the company’s products are manufactured into end-products.

In 2019 Alexium reported a loss of $10 million on sales of $7.6 million.
