Austal’s USS Oakland completes acceptance trials

The future USS Oakland (pictured) the 12th littoral combat ship built for the US Navy by international shipbuilder Austal has completed its acceptance trials.

Austal chief executive David Singleton said the completion of the trials during the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated the company’s capability and reliability under challenging conditions.

He said: “Austal USA has clearly answered the call, as part of a mission-essential industry, to continue operations…and deliver on commitments to the US Navy.”

The ship is scheduled for delivery in June.

The LCS is a high speed aluminium trimaran vessel, 127.4 metres long and capable of fulfilling multiple roles.

Perth-based Austal has a further six of the ships under construction at its Mobile, Alabama shipyard.
