Australia to host international marine robotics competition in 2022

The Maritime RobotX contest for marine autonomous systems will be held at Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith in November 2022.

The event is held every second year and attracts university teams from around the world. It will include a range of obstacle courses and an industry day for industry to connect with STEM talent in academia.

(Proposed tasks for the event, running November 11 – 17, can be seen here.)

“This competition enables students, academic institutions and industry partners to focus on the challenges of maritime autonomy – one of the fastest growing industrial pursuits of our time,” said defence industry minister Melissa Price in a statement.

“Robotic autonomous systems and artificial intelligence (RAS-AI) will play an increasing role in future Australian Defence Force capability.

“I would encourage Australian businesses and universities to test themselves by being involved in this event.”

The event will be delivered by Defence in partnership with United States not-for-profit organisation RoboNation, with support from the The Trusted Autonomous Systems Defence Cooperative Research Centre.

The event was first held in 2014 at the Marina Bay in Singapore.
