Textile recycler BlockTexx has taken top prize at the long-running Banksia Awards, which were held on Thursday night.

The annual Banksia National Sustainability Awards have been running since 1989, and celebrate “innovative, impactful solutions to the sustainability challenges of our times.”

BlockTexx was recognised at a gala ceremony in Melbourne for its development and implementation of a world-first method to recover plastic flakes and cellulose for reuse from blended polyester/cotton garments.

Judges praised the company for “extensive R&D efforts to solve the growing textile waste issue – globally it’s predicted to hit 140 million tonnes by 2030 and Australians are among the worst offenders.”

Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond said in a statement on Friday: “BlockTexx is leading efforts to make the fashion and textile industry circular – their work shows how smart ideas can turn old clothes into something valuable.

“They embody the innovation, passion and impact that the Banksia Foundation has showcased for 36 years.”

BlockTexx won the Circular Economy category at the awards, and was then selected as winner of the top prize from among all 14 category award winners.

BlockTexx was a gold award winner at @AuManufacturing’s Australia’s 50 Most Innovative Manufacturers 2024.

The company was founded by Graham Ross and Adrian Jones in 2018 and is currently able to process 10,000 tonnes of fabric every year at its recycling plant in Loganholme, Queensland.
