BlueScope operations hit by ‘extremely serious’ cyber attack

BlueScope Steel’s Australian and international operations have been hit by a cyber attack, the company confirmed today.

Its US North Star and New Zealand businesses are continuing largely unaffected with only minor disruptions.

However manufacturing and sales operations in Australia have been disrupted with some manufacturing processes paused.

Local steel despatches are continuing using some manual processes and workarounds.

BlueScope chief financial officer Tania Archibald the cyber incident was detected in one of the company’s US operations, sparking a prompt response.

Archibald said: “We are taking the event extremely seriously.

“Our people are working diligently to protect and restore our systems, and we are working with external providers to assist us.

“Our focus remains on being able to service our customers and to maintain safe and reliable operations.”

The company’s affected areas have reverted to manual operation where possible while impact and remedies are being assessed.

The company promised further updates.
