Brigadier Hugh Meggitt has been appointed as the new head of the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) for the Australian Defence Force, a move announced by the federal government on Tuesday.
Brigadier Meggitt (pictured), previously the Director General Special Operations Modernisation at the ADF’s Headquarters Joint Operations Command, is recognised for his extensive experience in innovation, capability delivery and industry engagement.
Under his leadership, ASCA is set to transition into the Vice Chief of the Defence Force Group. This strategic shift aims to align investments more closely with operational demands, ensuring that the development and deployment of capabilities are seamlessly integrated into the national defence strategy.
The government also expressed its gratitude towards Professor Emily Hilder for her foundational work with ASCA. Under her guidance, the initiative has made significant strides in areas such as hypersonics, directed energy and quantum technology, bolstering the Australian defence industry and contributing to job creation.
ASCA’s role is pivotal in accelerating the delivery of next-generation defence technologies to the ADF, fostering innovations that meet critical capability needs while supporting domestic manufacturing and job creation.
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles commented on the strategic importance of ASCA: “The Defence Strategic Review made clear that we needed to do more to invest in new and innovative technologies for the ADF, and that is precisely what the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator is delivering.”
This appointment marks a new chapter for ASCA, poised to further its mission of transforming Australia’s defence capabilities through advanced technologies and strategic industry partnerships.
