Bioengineering firm ByoMax has signed a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI) with Green Steel WA to supply ByoCoke made from waste biomass as a sustainable replacement for coal and coke at the company’s Collie, Western Australia green steel plant.
Green Steel WA is developing an electric arc furnace to recycle scrap and the state’s first green hydrogen direct-reduced iron (DRI) plant at the former coal mining town..
Singapore-based ByoMax engineers waste biomass as a sustainable replacement for coal and coke in hard-to-decarbonise sectors – however its modest website has few details of the process it uses or the company itself.
The CEO of ByoMax Kevin Bingwa said :”Our LOI with Green Steel WA marks a pivotal moment for ByoMax and for sustainable steel production.
“ByoCoke not only meets the rigorous demands of industrial steel production but does so sustainably, advancing the future of green manufacturing and reducing reliance on fossil-based inputs.”
Under the terms of the LOI, ByoMax will ‘undertake investigations’ and confirm that it will supply up to 20,000 tonnes of ByoCoke annually to the Collie Green Steel Mill at a cost that represents value for money for both parties.
ByoCoke, crafted from waste biomass, can replace traditional coal and coke without compromising production quality or efficiency, according to a statement.
“ByoMax’s advanced bioengineering process removes over 97 percent of alkaline, heavy metals, and volatile elements typically associated with slagging, reduced combustion kinetics, corrosion, and product defects, enabling ByoCoke to integrate seamlessly into high-demand industrial processes.”
