Calix lines up distributor for novel agricultural chemical

Chemical technology company Calix (ASX: CXL) has signed up one of Europe’s largest suppliers of sulphur-based fertilisers as exclusive distributor for its magnesium hydroxiide.

The company’s BOOSTER-Mag bioactiive magnesium hydroxide for agriculture will be distributed in Europe, Africa and the Middle East by Spanish fertiliser manufacturer, Afepasa.

The 10-year agreement is subject to performance hurdles which will see minimum sales rise from 100kl in the first year, to 400kl in year five.

BOOSTER-Mag, one of a suite of sustainable chemicals for various industry sectors developed by Calix, will continue to be manufactured in Queensland and Victoria.

Calix managing director, Phil Hodgson said: “Development of new agricultural products takes time and significant investment.

“As a result, it is very pleasing to have reached this significant milestone though partnering with a company of the reach and experience of Afepasa.”

Calix’s core technology is a patented kiln built in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria that produces “mineral honeycomb” – very highly active minerals.

Calix is using these minerals to improve waste water treatment and phosphate removal, help protect sewer assets from corrosion, and help improve food production from agriculture with reduced anti-biotics, fungicides and pesticides.

Afepasa managing director Manuel Montana said his company had been supplying sulphur fertilisers for 125 years.

Montana said: “Calix’s bioactive magnesium hydroxide has the potential to be a powerful and highly complementary addition to our mineral fertiliser and crop protection portfolio.”
