Charles Darwin University and others have developed a new Diploma of Advanced Manufacturing, designed to increase the availability of Industry 4.0 skills for the Northern Territory’s manufacturers.

The new course was developed by CDU’s North Australia Centre for Autonomous Systems (NACAS) in partnership with RMIT University, the federal department of education, and the territory’s government.

It is delivered at the Casuarina campus and online.

According to the course website, it runs for a year full-time or two years part-time, and qualifies a student for entry-level engineering roles or allows them to continue onto other engineering and IT degree courses.

As an apprenticeship program, “the course provides practical experience” to upskill the NT workforce, according to a statement from CDU.

Director at NACAS, Professor Hamish Campbell, said Industry 4.0 technologies were a way to address labour and distance challenges in manufacturing.

“It’s an exciting course and we have 20 free places for employer sponsored apprentices commencing in March 2023,” said Campbell.

The diploma includes topics on managing Industry 4.0 projects, establishing IoT on production lines, testing cyber security technologies, CAD, project management, and integrating 3D printing and robotics into manufacturing.

The course also offers an option to learn about Industry 4.0 manufacturing applied to the construction of drones.

Professor Pier Marzocca, Director of RMIT’s Sir Lawrence Wackett Defence and Aerospace Centre and co-director of the Joint CDU/RMIT Testlab, said that the collaborative co-design of the course resulted in a tailored program supporting the growing industry 4.0 workforce.

“These research and training programs offer great opportunities to the thriving aerospace and defence industry sector. Both RMIT and CDU are also committed to building a strong graduate program in these sectors through the CSIRO/Data 61 Next Generation Graduate Program which was recently awarded,” said Marzocca.
