Circular economy program marks 10 millionth recycled cup at Sydney event

Closed Loop held an event in Sydney on Monday to recycle its 10 millionth cup under the Simply Cups program.

The milestone was achieved in less than three years, and marked at an event with managing director of Closed Loop, Rob Pascoe, and CEO of 7-Eleven Australia, Angus McKay.

According to its website, Simpy Cups has collection points at nearly 1,000 locations at at 7-Eleven stores, cafes, hotels, hospitals and universities.

After trials with convenience store group 7-Eleven Australia in 2017, Simply Cups has added partnerships with Dexus, Officeworks and other companies.

Collected cups are upcycled into keep cups (pictured), drink trays, car park stops and outdoor furniture.

“This is a great practical example of Australia’s growing circular economy in action, and shows how we will all benefit from an invigorated waste and recycling industry,” said federal assistant minister for waste reduction Trevor Evans, who recycled the 10 millionth cup.
