Command and control specialist wins top defence science award

Defence

Dr Alex Kallouniatis, a senior operations analyst with the defence department, has earned the Minister’s Award for Achievement in Defence Science.

The annual award has been running since 1988, with Kallouniatis winning the 2021 award, which was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is given for scientific and technological contributions to Defence capability “of the highest order”.

Defence industry minister Melissa Price described the operations analyst as an outstanding scientist, and someone who had “conceived and been the driving force” of Command and Control concepts now central to the Australian Defence Force.

“As our ADF encounters increasingly complex and contested environments, they need to be able to bring together capabilities across all domains of warfare; air, maritime, land, space, information and cyber, to achieve complementary and coordinated effects,” said Price.

“Dr Kalloniatis’ work is critical to enabling the ADF to synchronise its efforts across all domains and operational levels.”
