Detpak introduces compostable food boxes

Packaging solutions company Detpak has launched more than 20 commercially-compostable and recyclable PBS-lined cartons, trays and lunchboxes, aligning with new legislation to cut single-use plastics in South and Western Australia.

PBS – or Polybutylene Succinate, a polymer made from renewable plant sources and a fossil fuel component, is extruded onto material to create a barrier for cartons.

The new PBS packaging range has attained both kerbside recyclability and commercial composting accreditation to both Australian and European standards.

Detmold Group General Manager of Product and Brand Keith Bishop said the range provided another option for businesses and consumers conscious of the environment.

Bishop said: “As sustainability becomes not just important, but essential, we’re working to reduce single-use plastics by increasing the number of recyclable and compostable packaging options for the takeaway food service market.

“The more sustainable choices we provide for businesses and consumers, the easier it will be to change habits within our wider community.

“The more packaging we can re-use, recycle or compost, the more we can help protect the environment.”

From Sunday, Single Use Problematic Plastics Legislation in South Australia and Western Australia now includes plastic plates and bowls among other takeaway food packaging being phased out of circulation.

Detpak worked closely with key food service customers, including Nando’s, to develop food boxes, pail packs, lunch boxes with windows and food trays which contain no added PFAS.
