The Electrolux Group’s Adelaide factory has been recognised in the South Australian Climate Leaders Awards for their continued commitment to climate change.
The Adelaide factory which manufactures kitchen ovens was adjudged the winner of the Large Enterprise category.
Electrolux is the only large whitegoods company still manufacturing in Australia, employing approximately 450 local workers.
The award recognises the role of a new electric furnace at the Dudley Park cooking plant, used to fire enamel on internal oven cavities, in the group’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions in the entire value chain by 2050.
The furnace is capable of being fuelled entirely by renewable energy and resulted in the removal of non-renewable natural gas as an energy source.
It is the first modern technology furnace to be installed within the Electrolux Group and the results of the project are being shared as a template for Electrolux plants globally.
Manufacturing Head, Food Preparation & GM Adelaide, Electrolux Group Phillip Saloniklis said: “This project continues our commitment to seek renewable energy alternatives in our factories.
“The furnace investment complements the installation of over 8,000 solar panels to power the facility and our Zero Waste to Landfill certification.”
Reaching temperatures of up to 900 degrees C, the furnace forms a key part of the appliance enamelling process.
It is capable of producing up to 240 60 cm oven cavities every hour with a firing time of four minutes per cavity – the overall performance reduces energy consumption by approximately 70 per cent.
Electrolux Group Managing Director ANZ Kurt Hegvold said: “This award is deserved recognition of the outstanding commitment by the Adelaide factory to seek ways to further utilise renewable energy and reduce the impact of our global operations.
“The Dudley Park site is leading the way for the Electrolux Group globally.”
