EOS secures $9 million defence space technologies contract

Defence and space manufacturer Electro Optic Systems has announced that its Space Technologies business has secured a $9 million contract with the Australian Defence Force Joint Capabilities Division to further develop space capabilities.

The contract follows an earlier $5 million contract announced in April which the company said at the time should be completed in 2024.

EOS did not detail the nature of the work being performed for the ADF Joint Capabilities Division which is a multi-domain group comprising of Space, Cyber and the Defence Networks, while delivering Strategic Military Effects and Logistics for the Defence Enterprise, according to Defence.

“JCG’s mission is to prepare Space and Cyber Power, and Logistics capabilities, in order to enable the integrated force in competition and conflict.”

EOS said in a brief statement that the project was a significant strategic opportunity for EOS and was consistent with EOS’ stated strategy of securing third party funding for new capability development work in Space Technologies.

“The project is expected to be delivered in 2H 2024 and 2025.”

EOS’s defence business is based on its space capabilities, which include high energy laser capabilities for space object tracking, characterisation, identification, optical communications, and remote manoeuvre.

EOS operates the Satellite Laser Ranging observatory at Mt Stromlo in the ACT (pictured), and has optical manufacturing capabilities, including building large telescopes and space laser communications devices.

Its capabilities complement those of the Defence Science and Technology Group which has capabilities in electro-optic system design, performance prediction and testing of missile warners and missile seekers, and signal processing and algorithm development.

EOS has been contacted for comment.
