Fast-growing prefab house company expects to hire 30 over next 12 months

Prefabricated home and office company ModnPods plans to double the size of its Arundel, Gold Coast facilities to around 6,000 square metres and to make nearly 100 hires over the next three years.

According to a statement from the Queensland government, the manufacturer had successfully applied for funding via the Business Investment Fund program, which will allow them to increase production to 200 of its pods per year.

The amount of funding was not specified in the release. It is the fifth investment from the fund, following Gilmour Space Technologies, Buildsafe, VALD and Skedulo.

Co-founder John Christie said that interest in his company’s products from the commercial sector was rising quickly.

“Even with our continuing strong residential pod sales, rising demand in the commercial space is seeing our market demand by enterprise clients represent 80 per cent of our forward order business,” he said.

ModnPods currently employs 16 and expects to hire 30 new staff within the next 12 months, and to reach a headcount of about 100 over the next three years.

“With faster completion time, greater flexibility, reduced waste output and lower costs, modular manufacturing is gaining popularity around the world as an alternative to traditional construction methods, said treasurer Cameron Dick.

“ModnPods ‘tiny homes’ are so popular that the company is having trouble keeping up with demand.”

As well as homes and offices, the company’s prefabricated pods are applicable in situations such as essential worker accommodation and holiday parks.

The funding would assist ModnPods to diversify into some of these markets, said Dick.
