Federal government announces program to link METS suppliers with Indian market

The federal government has announced a new $1.5 million program aimed at linking Australian mining equipment, technology and services (METS) companies with Indian miners.

Minister Keith Pitt announced the Global Mining Challenge – India on Monday, during a visit to the Bravura coal mine in central Queensland. It will be led by Austmine, a national METS industry association with 630 companies in its membership.

It would “identify key challenges within Indian mining companies and connect them with Australian METS companies”  as well as “deliver a greater understanding of the Indian mining sector,” said the federal resources minister.

“METS exports alone, including technologies and services, are highly sought after and worth about $15 billion every year going to more than 200 countries.

There are about 40 Australian METS businesses currently operating in India.

According to Austmine, the sector is worth approximately $90 billion in annual revenues.
