Federal government approves Yanco Delta

The 1,500 megawatt Yanco Delta Wind Farm project has been approved and will be one of the country’s largest clean energy projects, the federal government has announced.

The project is 10 kilometres north-west of Jerilderie on a 33,000-hectare site in the Murrumbidgee and Edward River Local Government Area.

The wind farm in the state’s South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) will be developed by Virya Energy, and gained NSW government approval in December.

With 208 wind turbines, an 800 megawatt battery and grid connection infrastructure, it will create enough energy to power 700,000 homes in NSW, according to a statement from environment minister Tanya Plibersek on Friday.

“We want to unlock Australia’s potential to be a world leader in renewable energy. It’s a huge task – we’re remaking our entire energy system,” said Plibersek.
