Alpha HPA has announced support from the Queensland government worth “up to $21.7 million”, which it will use to support Stage 2 of its HPA First project in Gladstone.

In a statement to the ASX on Wednesday, Alpha said the funding from department of state development would support capital expenditure for Stage 2 (full-scale) at the high-purity alumina plant.

Stage 1, a precursor production facility, is currently in the ramp-up phase. It is being expanded “to produce the full range of Alpha’s high-purity materials” with assistance from a $15.5 million Critical Minerals Accelerator Initiative, awarded by the previous federal government in April last year.

The company’s Managing Director Rimas Kairaitis said Alpha welcomed the funding, “and we welcome the state’s recognition of Alpha’s products [as] key critical minerals [in the] LED, E-Mobility, and semi-conductor markets.

“This financial assistance builds on the existing announced support from the Commonwealth Government and adds further momentum for the Project.”

Alpha was also – in a consortium with Orica – awarded another grant last year, worth $45 million, through the former federal government’s Modern Manufacturing Initiative.

High-purity alumina (HPA) is an in-demand material, used in applications including coatings for lithium ion battery separators, LED production, and synthetic sapphire production.
