Global market for additive manufacturing grew 19.5 per cent in 2021: Wohlers Report

Worldwide demand for additive manufacturing products and services expanded by 19.5 per cent over 2021, according to the annual Wohlers Report.

The rate of expansion was up from 7.5 per cent growth over 2020. A statement from Wohlers Associates – which was acquired by ASTM International late last year – did not give a total dollar value, but a 19.5 per cent increase on 2020’s total would give a figure of approximately $US 15.3 billion.

According to Terry Wohlers, founder of Wohlers Associates, AM had returned to “a period of advancement and investment” extending across “aerospace, healthcare, automotive, consumer products, energy, and other sectors.”

A sign of the rise in AM for series production was the 43.3 per cent uptick last year of polymer powder consumption to overtake photopolymer resins (see diagram below), said the report’s publisher.

The report has been compiled by Wohlers Associates since 1996, and this is the 27th consecutive edition.

The 425-page report featured 93 co-authors from 33 countries, with input from 117 service providers, 29 producers of materials, 114 AM system manufacturers and 152 universities and research institutes. It has been published since 1996, and the most recent is the 27th consecutive edition.
