Hearing on Space Command and capability to be held






A parliamentary subcommittee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade will hold a public hearing on Space Command and capability on Tuesday,

According to a statement from Julian Hill MP, chair of the Defence Subcommittee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, the subcommittee will hear evidence from an academic panel. 

A summary reads that the subcommittee “is interested in reviewing Defence Space Command, its relationship and interoperability with coalition partners, and its emerging capabilities including key milestones”, noting the DSC’s relatively new status. The agency was established in January 2022.

“Space is now a contested domain. Defence must be able to rapidly adapt to the ever-changing operating environment as well as ready itself for future competition and conflict,” said Hill.

“Leading experts will publicly share their views on Australian Space Command’s relationship and interoperability with coalition partners, its evolving mandate, space-based operations, and its approach towards capability realisation in light of the Defence Strategic Review.”

The public hearing the subcommittee’s second in support of its inquiry into the Department of Defence Annual Report 2021–22.
