A new Advanced Manufacturing Centre of Excellence at Melbourne Polytechnic’s Heidelberg campus was opened on Monday.

The new $3.2 million facility was described as “next-generation manufacturing training centre” that would train Victoria’s next generation of engineers on “technology in robotics, 3D printing, and computer design will support a range of industries including biomedical, defence and aerospace and food technologies.”

State minister for education Gayle Tierney said in a statement that, “This centre is just one of the ways we are ensuring that we have the highly skilled, sustainable workforce needed to secure Victoria’s future prosperity.”

The facility will also partner with Apprenticeships Victoria to promote engineering careers to high schoolers and provide hands-on training to entry-level engineers. The centre was supported by $1.4 million through the state government’s Apprenticeships Victoria program.
