A beverage maker, packaging group and waste management company will jointly develop a plastic pelletising plant in Albury/Wodonga to close the loop and contribute to a circular economy.
Pact Holdings, Cleanaway Waste Management and Asahi Beverages plan a facility to process up to 28,000 tonnes of plastic bottles and recyclables into flake and food grade pellets to be used as packaging raw material.
Cleanaway will provide feedstock through its collection network, Pact will provide packaging expertise and Asahi and Pact will buy the majority of the recycled pellets.
The facility will employ 35 and be in operation by the end of 2021.
Asahi Beverage Group CEO Robert Iervasl said: “This venture will allow us to utilise Australian sourced recycled plastic resins to assist in meeting our sustainability commitment to transition our portfolio to recycled plastics.
“(This is an) opportunity to participate in a market winning strategic alliance that closes the loop of the circular economy and contributes to a sustainable plastics supply chain by combining our strategic capabilities.”
For Pact the project supports its 2025 goal of offering 30 per cent recycled content.
The initiative is supported by a grant to Cleanaway by the Environmental Trust funded by the NSW waste levy.
