Industry minister Karen Andrews has announced that a patent system review will be launched some time in the next few months and be delivered to the federal government by May 2021.
The review would run for six months, be chaired by Emeritus Professor Raoul Mortley, and “consider the accessibility for small and medium enterprises (SMEs)”.
It would be one of a series of announcements made in coming months to improve the intellectual property system,
according to a statement from Andrews, “including an SME case management service, the SME fast track service, a dedicated outreach program and an online portal.”
More information would be announced shortly on the department of industry’s website. Submissions would be welcomed from SMEs “who use or are considering using the patent system” here and overseas, as well as interested stakeholders and members of the public.
