Pratt, premier cut ribbon at $150 million Penrith glass factory upgrade

Visy officially opened a new $150 million investment at Penrith on Thursday, and says it is now running the country’s most energy-efficient glass furnace.

Visy Chairman Anthony Pratt (pictured on right) said it is Australia’s first oxygen-only fuelled furnace, and uses less than half the energy than the one it replaced. This represented “saving enough energy to heat over 32,000 Sydney homes every year”, said Pratt.

State premier Chris Minns (on left) was there with Pratt for the opening of upgrades at the site, which is NSW’s only glass bottle and jar factory.

According to Visy, the facility will also use recycled cullet pre-heating technology to increase the use of recycled glass.

“This new technology is part of our program to make glass containers with an average 70 per cent recycled content across Australia and New Zealand,” Pratt said.

The site produces over 800 million glass containers annually, used by food and beverage brands including Vegemite, Cottee’s Jam, Toohey’s New and Bundaberg Ginger Beer.

“We welcome Visy’s vote of confidence in Western Sydney and NSW. The bottles and jars made here will end up in the hands of millions of Aussies each year,” added Minns.
