Pure Hydrogen garbage truck for Newcastle

Manufacturing News

Clean energy and mobility company Pure Hydrogen is to supply a rear-loading hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) waste collection vehicle to the City of Newcastle, NSW.

The vehicle, to be assembled by Pure Hydrogen subsidiary HDrive International, will be supplied under a lease, which will allow a 12 month trial period and a potential four year extension.

The body of the vehicle will be supplied and fitted by the Australian business of equipment provider Bucher Municipal.

The vehicle will run on green hydrogen produced through electrolysis of water.

The lease is the fifth order for HFC waste collection vehicles supplied by the company into the Australian market.

Pure Hydrogen Managing Director Scott Brown said: “Pure Hydrogen is at the forefront of the emerging hydrogen economy and this partnership further demonstrates our growing presence in the waste management sector in Australia.

“As we continue to successfully execute our hydrogen vehicle strategy, Pure Hydrogen is on track to deliver a significant number of vehicles in FY25.”

The company is also fulfilling orders for its Taurus hydrogen fuel cell powered prime mover.

“Data from the 12 month trial will help inform City of Newcastle’s future purchases of waste trucks.

“Over the coming four years City of Newcastle is expected to replace a significant number of its existing diesel powered green and red lid bin trucks as part of the routine renewal of the fleet.”

The city’s intention is to move to a net-zero carbon footprint for vehicles and equipment.
