Territory aircraft manufacturing takes off

The first Albatross G-111T aircraft to be built in the Northern Territory – and Australia – has been purchased by an Australian investor.

Entrepreneur and Shark Tank ‘shark’ Steve Baxter signed a contract of purchase to buy the amphibious aircraft being built by a Japanese/Australian partnership.

Amphibian Aerospace Industries (AAI) will manufacture the planes at Darwin Aviation Manufacturing Precinct, partnering with established Japanese aircraft manufacturer ShinMaywa, and backed by a $10 million in funding from the Territory government.

Fifteen suppliers have lined up such as SPEE3D, Nupress Group, Heat Treatment Australia, Dassault Systèms and Airport Development Group (ADG).

Others involved in the bid include the Territory Aviation Skills Centre, the Chamber of Commerce Northern Territory (NT), Industry Capability Network NT, Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Paspalis Innovation Investment Fund and the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre NT.
