US data centres buy up Aussie dual-fuel generator kits

Manufacturing News

Eden Innovations has seen a rush of interest in its dual-fuel, diesel-powered generators retrofit kits from new and existing US-based data centres.

The company makes a high-performance concrete admixture and OptiBlend, a retrofit kit that allows these generators to operate on a fuel mixture of 60-65 per cent natural gas and 35-40 per cent diesel fuel.

It recently received orders for six new OptiBlend kits, worth almost half a million dollars from two US data centres, with another data centre indicating requirement for a further six kits.

These kits allow the generators to extend the time they can provide data centres with back-up power by to 300 per cent due to the significantly reduced consumption of onsite stored diesel fuel.

Consistent energy security is critical for the growing data centre sector.

Data centres are becoming increasing energy-hungry, with one large centre consuming the same amount of energy as 50,000 homes, with the International Energy Agency forecasting total energy demand to rise to more than all of Japan by 2030.

Eden said in addition to providing energy security, it is also helping to lower operating costs due to the lower price natural gas compared to diesel fuel, as well as providing a reduction in emissions.

Since 1 July, Eden has also provided further quotations for almost $2 million worth of OptiBlend kits.
