WA battery materials plan moves forward

Perth’s FYI Resources (ASX: FYI) has received state government backing for its Cadoux Kaolin High Purity Alumina (HPA) project.

Western Australian Premier, Mark McGowan supported FYI’s project as part of the state’s Future Battery Industry Strategy which aims to position WA as a key supplier of value-added materials needed for lithium ion battery production.

Alumina is used as a separator inside lithium batteries, and also forms the basis for novel aluminium-ion batteries.

Other uses are in LED lighting, electronic displays, automotive and medical products.

McGowan said: “The Cadoux project presents a great example of WA building on its competitive advantages and moving further up the value chain into downstream processing of diverse battery minerals.”

The WA Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation will provide FYI with lead agency services as it delivers the project.

FYI plans a mine for alumina rich koalin and a refinery in the Kwinana industrial area, south of Perth, which boats a number of lithium-ion related projects.
