WA funds Northam hydrogen project

Manufacturing News

The Western Australian government’s Investment Attraction Fund has committed $148.4 million for 40 new projects, including $5 million for one of the state’s first end-to-end green hydrogen production systems.

Infinite Green Energy’s (IGE’s) green hydrogen production system in Northam in the state’s wheatbelt will host the small scale green hydrogen production system to supply the domestic transport market.

The system, dubbed the MEG HP1 Hydrogen project, will be built in partnership by IGE, Korean Samsung C&T and Doral Energy Group with $5 million support from the WA government fund.

The project has been envisioned to kick start the development of an end-user market for hydrogen through a fast tracked hydrogen production schedule.

The project will be powered by renewable energy sources and will have up to 10MW of electrolyser capacity with a nameplate production capacity of 4.4 tonnes of hydrogen per day.

IGE expect first gas to be produced by 2024.

Hydrogen Industry Minister Bill Johnston said: “This is an important step to help kickstart the development of an end-user market for locally produced green hydrogen.

“The construction, commissioning and ongoing maintenance of the MEG HP1 Hydrogen project is expected to create over 100 jobs and help decarbonise the State’s economy.”

Green hydrogen produced by the project aims to be a cost competitive, environmentally friendly alternative to other forms of transportation fuels such as diesel.

Launched in March 2022, the WA’s Investment Attraction Fund was developed to attract new investment in the State and create local jobs.

Infinite Green Energy is a vertically integrated business, offering advisory, engineering and design, with a focus of developing projects that we build own and operate.
