Winners named at QLD and NT Welding Excellence Awards

Industry body Weld Australia hosted the 2024 Queensland and Northern Territory Welding Excellence Awards in Brisbane on Wednesday night, celebrating the work of local welders, fabricators, and educators.

The event at Waters Edge in Hamilton “showcase[d] the exceptional talent of welders and fabricators across Queensland and the Northern Territory” said Weld Australia CEO Geoff Crittenden in a statement on Thursday.

“The winners this year embody the pursuit of cutting-edge, sustainable solutions that enhance project outcomes while reducing risks, alongside initiatives that broaden and deepen the skilled workforce within the welding sector.”

The Company of the Year Award – Fabrication was taken out by Russell Mineral Equipment, a specialist in grinding mill relining systems that also won the Export Award category and a Top Ten Gold Award at this title’s Australia’s 50 Most Innovative Manufacturers awards in April.

Custom metal workshop Rockpress won the 2024 Project of the Year Award for the LAND 907 project, led by Thomas Global Systems, and assisting the Australian Defence Force (ADF) through advanced simulation technology. Rockpress was “crucial in the development and delivery of the M1A2 Immersive Tactical Trainer (ITT) Mission and Support System, creating a synthetic combined arms training environment that mirrors real-world combat situations.”

The Health and Safety in Welding Award was won by Monadelphous, a multidisciplinary construction, maintenance and industrial service provider to many resources, energy and infrastructure clients. The award recognised its “proactive health monitoring practices, comprehensive training programs, and investment in top-tier protective equipment,” demonstrating “their commitment to the wellbeing of their workforce.”

Company of the Year Award – Supplier was Aitken Welding Supplies, an independent, Australian family-owned company with nearly 40 years’ experience in the welding and industrial supply. 

Other winners included CQ University (Training and Education – Organisation Award); Joseph Genrich from Downer (Welding Coordinator); Andrew Martin from Arm Welding Services (Welding Inspector); Mark Sullivan from Certified Welding Company (Welding Supervisor); Brylie Jones from Stanwell Corporation (Young Trades Person of the Year); Greg Martin from TAFE Queensland North (Training and Education – Individual Teacher Award); and DGH and IQ Solutions (joint winners of the special CEO’s Award for services to the Australian welding industry.)
