ASX-listed semiconductor developer and maker BluGlass has announced an order worth $120,000 for “semi-custom Gallium Nitride (GaN) laser diode bar products” from the University of Central Florida’s College of Optics and Photonics, a repeat customer.

According to a statement on Thursday from the company, which operates across Australia and the United States, the order follows successful demonstration of “significant performance improvements” using BluGlass’s GaN laser bars ”in a Coherent Beam Combining (CBC) array.”

“This repeat order validates the exceptional performance of our custom GaN laser technology, demonstrating our ability to help customers solve critical challenges and pioneer next-generation visible laser applications,” said CEO Jim Haden.

“These performance advantages help position the [c]ompany for future growth, and building on this success, we will leverage our partnership with this leading university to pursue critical defence applications that require the  superior coherence, stability, and precision of BluGlass’ GaN lasers.”

BluGlass specialises in GaN compound semiconductors made using its proprietary remote plasma chemical vapor deposition (RPCVD) technology. It has a headquarters in Silverwater, NSW, with US facilities in Nashua, New Hampshire and Fremont, California.

The statement added that its designs had shown “superior coherence and phase locking in high-power blue laser arrays, demonstrating improved performance and precision, compared to commercially available laser bars” and described the CBC configuration as merging “light emitted from an array of broad linewidth multi-mode lasers into a high-power single-mode, narrow linewidth, coherent beam.”

The designs’ usefulness in achieving powerful blue laser beams offers applications including in LIDAR systems mapping the seafloor, space communications and quantum sensors, BluGlass said.
