CDS Vic reaches a billion beverage containers in first year

Manufacturing News

Approximately a billion beverage containers have been kept out of landfill in the first 12 months as a result of the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic), according to its coordinator.

CDS Vic was announced in April last year and the program officially launched the following November 1.

VicReturn – which includes Lion, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and Asahi Beverages as members – was appointed as scheme coordinator. It offers 10 cents per eligible container to those turning them in at one of 647 return points in Victoria.

According to a statement from VicReturn on Thursday, charities and community groups have used it to raise over $950,000 across the state in the first 12 months, and over 590 jobs were created. It estimates $100 million in total “going back to the community”.

CEO Jim Round said: “Across the state, we are working with community groups like Scouts and major sporting organisations like AFL Victoria and Tennis Victoria to ensure we reach as many Victorians as possible.

“Next time you return containers, wish our incredible depot operators and over-the-counter businesses a happy first birthday!”

CDS Vic is regulated by the state government and is a product stewardship scheme, with beverage companies paying for the 10 cent refund and operating costs.
