The federal government has announced an investment of $2.5 million from its TAFE Technology Fund, with another $1 million from Charles Darwin University, to establish a Technical Trades Training Centre at CDU’s Katherine campus.

In a statement from the government on Tuesday, it said that the $3.5 million project will help meet training in current and emerging skills priorities for the region, “including building and construction, engineering, electrotechnology, plumbing and automotive.”

It would expand capacity to deliver vocational education and training in the region, creating a “pathway for disengaged young people, especially First Nations people”.

“We believe everyone deserves access to vocational education and training, including Australians in remote areas of the country,” said skills minister Brendan O’Connor.

The new facilities will include welding bays, drill presses and bench vices, and equipment will be “designed to be mobile or disassembled for easy storage”.
