Technology

Melbourne’s Monash University has been announced as one of ten winners internationally of unique grants being awarded by international group the Algorand Foundation to further education, and research into positive effects of blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies.

The university’s Dr. Joseph Liu will receive a share of $50 million over five years to fund an Algorand Centre of Excellence.

Planned is multi-disciplinary research in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space, college courses, hackathons, accelerators and student-led organisations and activities.

The hubs are aimed at development of real-world solutions and applications and delivering social impact and sustainability projects based on blockchain technology.

Universities in the United States, Italy, South Africa, Germany and Singapore were also named as Algorand hubs.

Algorand Foundation’s principal researcher Dr. Hugo Krawczyk said: “The selection process was incredibly difficult, given how many excellent applications we received.

“But we’re delighted to see how many bright, talented people around the globe recognize the ability of blockchain technology to fundamentally change and better the world we live in, and we’re very much looking forward to seeing the amazing work the grant recipients do in the coming months and years.”

The Algorand Foundation’s mission is to grow the ecosystem of Algorand, the carbon-negative Layer 1 blockchain invented by Turing Award winner and MIT professor Silvio Micali.
